Department of Secretarial Studies

The department of Secretarial Studies offers programmes at NTA Level 4, 5 and 6; namely: Basic Technician Certificate in Secretarial Studies (BTCSS), Technician Certificate in Secretarial Studies (TCSS), and Diploma in Certificate in Secretarial Studies (DSS)

Basic Technician Certificate in Secretarial Studies (NTA Level 4)

This course is provided as a pre-requisite for entry qualification for secretarial carder (Assistant Personal Secretary) and a qualification for a Technician Certificate in Secretarial Studies.After completion of the programmes the candidates should be able to:
  • Demonstrate basic typing skills
  • Apply basic computer applications
  • Apply business language for official communication
  • Apply basic office procedures in carrying out secretarial duties
  • Prepare Learners for Technical Certificate in Secretarial Studies
  • Meet the set standards of NACTE

Technician Certificate Secretarial Studies (NTA Level 5)

This programme is intended to prepare Learners for career in Secretarial Studies. It is also aimed at preparing Learners for Diploma Programme. Upon completion of this programme the holder of the qualification will be able to apply skills and knowledge in a broad range of activities, some of which are non-routine and be able to assume operational responsibilities. Upon completion of the Technical Certificate in Secretarial Studies programme, the learner is able to:
  • Apply skills and knowledge of Secretarial Studies for improved work in organisation
  • Apply office procedure skills for maintaining organisational performance
  • Employ interpersonal and communication skills techniques for improved service delivery

Diploma in Secretarial Studies (NTA Level 6)

This programme is intended to prepare Learners for higher career in Secretarial cadre and especially at a managerial level. It is also aimed at preparing students for degree programme. Upon completion of this programme the holder of this qualification will be able to apply skills and knowledge in a broad range of work activities, most of which are non-routine. Upon completion of the Diploma in Secretarial Studies programme, the Learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate advanced computer skills
  • Apply shorthand and Hatimkato skills for effective note taking/li>
  • Apply principles of office management for efficient work performance
  • Apply basic principles of records and information management
  • Apply communication and interpersonal skills techniques in handling customers
  • Analyse Government Structure, Organisation and Diversity Issues
